Christmas weekend...

It was a busy Christmas this year!

I had the week off work, even though I did spend some time on the work computer! With the construction going on in the master bathroom, we had "guests" everyday last week. So, we spent most of the week just hanging out around the house, trying to stay out of the way.

Our tradition is to have our Christmas on Christmas Eve. As you know, our oldest is my step-son, so we have to share him around the holidays! Typically, each year, he wakes up with us on Christmas morning, we eat breakfast, open Santa gifts, then he's off to his mom's for the remainder of his holiday. Since he's gone for most of the day on Christmas day, our family day is Christmas Eve.

I wasn't exactly thrilled with having our Christmas celebration with the workers in and out of the house, so we delayed opening gifts until that evening. We had our dinner, then moved the gifts into the family room to get out of the way, and opened them. I couldn't put the kids off any longer, so we just had to ignore the workers.

Hubby's family has a tradition of opening presents one-by-one, starting with the youngest. This year, we did it a little different. Our youngest boy wanted to go last since the oldest members of the family "have less time left to play with all of their gifts". I think he's saying we're old and we're going to die first!!

I think everyone was happy with their loot. The youngest boy got some magic sets, a scooter, a couple video games, legos, cash, a remote control helicopter... The oldest boy got itunes gift cards, PJs, a t-shirt, cologne, cash... And, Santa brought them a ping pong table.

On Christmas day, we went to my dad's house to have Christmas dinner with my family, and to help them move. They are living in a rent house that is literally next door to a new house they are building. My dad is injured and can't lift anything, so we took on the task. Originally, the plan was for our oldest boy to gather some of his football buddies to do the moving and dad would pay them instead of movers. That plan went out the window when the move was delayed to the week of Christmas!

All day Saturday and most of Sunday, we spent walking back and forth with arms of stuff to be moved. We moved everything except for beds and what hadn't already been packing into boxes on Saturday. As soon as we got up Sunday morning, we started disassembling beds to move. There was still quite a bit of work left to do when we left on Sunday. Our moving was cut short on Sunday because we were tired, and we had a date with the Aeros at the Toyota Center to get to!

I think they have everything moved now and the rental house cleaned. Now, they have the fun task of unpacking and organizing the house. Better them than me!!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and Santa was good to you. I can't believe it's almost 2011...

Master Bathroom... still going

Well, Friday came and went and the bathroom is not finished. No surprise there! The tile work is done finally. It was mostly done on Friday, but we were short 1 piece of tile. That little bit was finished up and grouted today.

We found out Friday that they won't even measure for the glass for the shower until everything else is finished since it will be a custom size. And, it will take 7-10 days for the glass to come in after it's been ordered. Ugh! We'll have to see if we can point the shower heads straight down and shower in there without water going EVERYWHERE! Otherwise, we'll be sharing the other shower for at least another week.

They started working on the plumbing for the vanity, and hopefully that will be finished up tomorrow or first thing Wednesday morning. Hubby will put the mirror up once the vanity is in place.

I have some painting to finish up / touch up, but I should be able to get that done in a day. Then, (other than the glass) I think that does it except for decorations & finishing touches.

It looks great.

Here's a sneak peak at the shower (without the fixtures). This is the "hers" side, with the window. In the corner, that you can't see, there's a small bench for shaving legs or whatever...

Aeros vs Stars

Leave it to the Aeros.. the one night when I HAVE to be outta the Toyota Center by about 6:30 or so, they go to a shootout. Wouldn't it be a whole lot easier to just win it in regulation? It would have only taken you 18 more damn seconds!!

We stayed through overtime, but had to listen to Joe for the shootout as we made our way outta downtown.

Warren Peters put the Aeros on the board early, 30 seconds into the game. But, then the ref had a moment with his whistle and called penalty after penalty after penalty. It seemed like it was going to be one of those games! It was one of those situations where you just knew it was only a matter of time before the Stars got one behind Hackett with three consecutive power plays.

Well, they did get a power play goal to tie it, then got another goal to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. What's the deal with these Aeros? They seem to almost consistently get the first goal, then give up 2 or 3 goals.

There weren't nearly as many penalties in the second period, but the Aeros only needed one of them to get their own power play goal, and go into the second intermission with a 2-2 tie. It was Jon DiSalvatore with his 6th goal of the year. It sure seems like he's been quiet this year. I'll be honest, I was surprised that he has 6 goals!! He didn't stay at 6 goals for long, as he got another PP goal in the third to get the lead back, at 3-2.

The Stars pulled Bachman with just over a minute left on the clock, and with 18 point something seconds left, the Stars tied it. Damn it!

We stayed through overtime, and it seemed like the Stars controlled most of the play, even though they didn't register many shots. And, that's when we vacated.

The shoot out went seven rounds before a winner was decided. Robbie Earl, who I thought had a great game, Chad Rau, and Cody Almond scored in the shootout to seal the victory for the Aeros.

Unfortunately, we gave the Stars a point, so they sit just ahead of the Aeros in 4th place in the West. The Aeros jumped from 7th to 5th. The Aeros have played more games than anyone on the West, so that very well could change in a hurry.

It's a busy week now for the Aeros. San Antonio Rampage on Monday, Milwaukee Admirals on Wednesday, and Rockford Icehogs on Thursday. All three games on the road. They'll come home to face San Antonio on New Year's Day, then they'll get some much needed time off.

Honestly, this team scares me when they have 4 or 5 days off, but I think they probably need it about now! I know they just had some time off for Christmas, but we all know that holidays are anything but relaxing!!

Also, in other Aeros news, Bryce Lampman was released just before Christmas...

Merry Christmas - our boy's first car accident

We knew it was coming... that phone call that you dread as a parent of a teenage driver, but you know you will get it eventually! Christmas Eve, our oldest boy was in his first car accident. Merry Christmas to him.

He called the house, and when I answered, all I got was "you've gotta come up here. Some friggen guy just hit me". So, I jump in my car to get there to make sure everything & everyone was ok. He was running an errand to Randalls for me, so he was maybe a mile from the house when it happened.

When I got there, I was first greeted by a woman who witnessed the accident and made sure my boy was ok. She also gave me her information, just in case the other guy was an ass and wanted to deny anything. Thank you!!

When I walked up to where my boy and the other driver were standing, the poor kid looked like he had seen a ghost. His face was completely white and he was freaked out, to say the least, but physically he was fine. Thankfully, there were no injuries!

He was in the left turn lane waiting to turn into the parking lot of Randall's. The guy that hit him was coming out of the Randall's parking lot, turning left onto the road. He thought he had enough space to get behind my boy's car and make his turn, but nope! He clipped my boy on the back corner of his car, pushing him into traffic and killing his rear bumper.

Our boy's car was drivable, so he pulled into the parking lot to get out of the road. The other guy wasn't as lucky. The rod on his front wheels broke, so he couldn't steer. His driver side front tire wouldn't turn with the steering wheel, so he had to have his towed.

We exchanged information, called the police, and got everything squared away. The other guy flat out told the police officer that it was his fault, and they had already called the insurance and given me a claim number. It was pretty easy and quick to get everything out of the way, once the police officer got there.

I drove the boy's car home to listen for any out of the ordinary sounds and to make sure it drove ok. He followed me home in my car. It drove and sounded ok, but the side fender is hanging off, so if we drive it over about 30 miles per hour, it will start flapping in the wind. Just my luck would be that damn thing flying off and causing another accident! Just under the corner bumper, where the impact was, there's a small dent in the frame. Hopefully, it isn't enough to compromise the frame of the car. Otherwise, I don't think they'll bother fixing it. It's got 120,000 miles on it, it's old, and it's not worth much!

So, for now, the car is parked. The other guy's insurance is making arrangements for someone to come get it and take it to one of their preferred shops. I don't care where they take it, as long as it's fixed right.

Now, my boy realizes just how fast wrecks happen. He was beating himself up because he didn't see it coming and couldn't avoid it, but that's the way it happens sometimes. Although it sucks for him to have no car for the last half of his Christmas break, he has now had a nice reality check for something that kids think will never happen to them since they are "good drivers".

I'm thankful that no one was hurt. I'm thankful that he has learned something very valuable out of this. And, I'm hopeful that it's a minor fix, replace the bumper, and send us on our way.

Here's some pics...

Master Bathroom.. hurry up already

I'll be honest, this master bathroom project is going much slower than I hoped it would. We were crossing our fingers to be finished by Friday, but I'll be surprised if we are. There's still tons of work to do.

All day Monday was spent chipping the concrete floor to move the drains. I swear I thought the guy was digging his escape to China through my bathroom floor. All. Damn. Day! At one point, my youngest boy asked me why my bedroom was filled with smoke. Yeah, that was dust! We have wood or tile floors everywhere except for the small bedrooms. I have been mopping/dusting EVERY night when they pack up and get out of here. It's so dusty in this house, it's making me crazy!!

Yesterday, the plumbing was tested for leaks, then the walls were sheetrocked. Phase 1 of the shower pan is down - the plastic-looking bit that goes under the concrete/mortar/tile. Today, the floor is being tiled. Tomorrow grout, then we can finally put the toilet back in place. It's been almost 2 full weeks with 4 of us sharing one toilet - not fun!

We still have to finish the shower pan, tile in the shower & floor, grout, sheetrock on the wall where the old closet door was, moving the plumbing for the vanity and hooking that all up, baseboards, painting touch ups, sealing the tile & grout, etc. I just don't see Friday being the day.

Obviously, no work will happen in there for the weekend. Everyone gets to enjoy Christmas, then I guess we'll finish up the small stuff early next week. I've been taking pictures as we go, so I'll post them after Christmas with the final finished bathroom.

Here's a few of the progress. Hopefully this helps some of my ramblings make some sense!!

Here you can see the current drain in the floor and where he had to dig out concrete to move the drain to. That's the "hers" side of the shower with the window.

Here's the "his" side of the shower, after sheetrock, and the hole in the wall where the sliding closet door used to be. That will be sheetrocked and painted, eventually!

The shower closed in. The short wall in the front will have stone on the outside and glass on top. The middle will be the shower door. That's a damn big shower!!

Aeros vs Bulldogs

That game was hard to watch. And, to think I was so damn excited to finally have another home game last night. The boys coming back of a bad road trip, the last game before Christmas, a chance to redeem themselves, to go out on a high note, blah blah blah... they sucked!

Every aspect of the game was bad, just BAD... unless you're a Bulldog fan! In fact, we were sure it was going to be a very ugly game when the Aeros skated out for the second period. That's the end of the ice where we sit, so we get a close up view of them when they skate around the net. Every one of them looked dejected and defeated, especially Warren Peters. It looked liked we needed to put him on suicide watch, he looked so upset. It was obvious there was no fight in them, and they were just beat down.

Khudobin was solid early in the season. In fact, it was getting to where we often wondered if Hackett would get much playing time. I don't know what happened to that Khudobin, but Santa, please bring him back for Christmas. He's been yanked I don't know how many times over the last few games, and this Aeros team cannot come from behind. Although coming from 5 goals behind just doesn't happen anyway!

Hackett was good in relief, very good. One of the very few, maybe only bright spots of last night's game. He only faced 12 shots, but there were some good quality shots coming his way and he was on. Does Yeo go with him on Sunday because he's well rested and seems to be playing well? Or, does Khudobin get back in there to redeem himself and bounce back from a terrible game?

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't all Khudobin's fault. The boys were fumbling pucks left and right, passing to the wrong damn team, getting beat in battles along the boards, it was just an ugly night all the way around.

If you look at the scoresheet, it looks like Sanford had a hell of a game. He had almost 40 shots fired his way, but honestly, I would say the majority of those shots were right into him, with no traffic in front, or from long range. He did play a great game, there's no doubt, but he wasn't having to make any acrobatic saves. Those saves where you just say "wow, that was awesome". The Aeros took it easy on him!

For the Bulldogs, it seemed like the smallest guy on their team was just chewing up the Aeros and spitting them out. Desharnais was good, very good for them. 2 shorthanded goals, yes TWO and 2 assists on the night for him.

The boys must already have Christmas on the brain, as we all do, and they just weren't up for this game. It's over now, and they get to think about it for a few days before coming back home to the Stars on Sunday. Let's hope they turn this around quick. It's make or break time and streaks of 1-5 or whatever they're at now won't secure any post season hockey in Houston.

Merry Christmas everyone. Enjoy your family & friends, eat lots of food and I hope Santa is good to you. See you on Sunday.

Master Bathroom... progress

My home owners association LOVES me right about now!!

This was the scene as I pulled into my driveway after work. Yes, that's my master bathroom nicely stacked into a pile of junk waiting to be hauled off! It should be hauled away tomorrow, so hopefully the HOA patrol hasn't made their rounds yet!

The bathroom is torn down to concrete floors and the studs in the walls. Today, they are moving the plumbing for the showers and reframing the door for hubby's closet. He's got double sliding doors to get in and out of his closet, but the way they are situated would make the wall for our new shower uneven. So, we are taking the double doors out and he gets a single hinged door, just like mine!!

We are building a 4 foot wall across what will be the new shower to close it in. It will start on one side of the bathroom, right under the window, and continue to the other side of the bathroom, which is where hubby's closet door is. If you take a straight line from under the window to the other side of the bathroom, the closet is in the way. We couldn't build the wall straight unless we move the doors.

The front side of the wall will be stone and we'll have glass on top, with a door right smack in the middle. When you walk into the shower, the left side will be "hers" with a bench under the window for ease of shaving. The right side will be "his". The shower in it's entirety will be about 9 feet long. Yay, a nice big shower! It will be a bit of a shock going from our little bitty 4x4 shower!

Tonight, hubby is going to take the old light down, so I can paint around it. Then we'll put the new light up. I also need to texture and paint the walls where the vanity will be. That will be my fun for tonight. I'll turn Joe on the radio for some Aeros action and get my work done in there, so they can get the tile in and put the vanity in place.

Luckily, it hasn't been too big of a hassle sharing one bathroom so far, but I'll be happy when this is finished. The house is so damn dusty from them scraping the old tile mortar off the concrete floor!! I dusted our bedroom last night, and I'll probably have to do it again tonight. The joys of home improvement projects!!

Bobby Ryan / Mikko Koivu stick exchange

If you missed the Wild vs Ducks game on Sunday, you missed some funny shit! I'll be honest, there wasn't much to be laughing about if you're a Wild fan, but this was awesome!

Late in the second period, Mikko Koivu loses his stick in the defensive zone. Somehow he manages to rip Bobby Ryan's stick right out of his hands and was playing with Ryan's stick. Meanwhile, Antti Miettinen is conveniently moving the stick to a position where Ryan can pick up the stick and score with it. You can see the video here.

After the goal, it looked as if the Wild were arguing that Ryan scored with an illegal stick, but apparently there's no ruling about playing with someone else's stick like that. The reality is that had Koivu not stolen Ryan's stick, he would have never been able to score with the wrong stick!

It was an absolutely awesome sequence of events. LOL funny, even for Wild fans!! Kudos to Ryan. Play of the year, IMO!!

Hats... Throw the hats...

I'll be honest, I was really disappointed and bummed for Casey Wellman when ONE hat hit the ice after his 1st period hat trick on Friday night.

Let me help you out here. From wikipedia:
"NHL hockey tradition sees fans throw their hats on the ice after the third goal by any player."

Ok, this isn't the NHL, but the same applies for the AHL. Throw your damn hats you cheap bums!

The boys, especially Wellman, played a fantastic game on Friday night. The big dogs from the Wild were in Houston for the game, and boy did Wellman show them something. And, what a game by Chad Rau. It's nice to have him back on the ice!

It was also the Aeros annual Teddy Bear Toss game, in which fans throw stuffed animals on the ice after the first Aeros goal for charity. The fans got that one right and it rained stuffed animals forever, it seemed. How cool was it to see the entire Aeros bench on the ice helping to clear the ice of stuffed animals?!

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting that kind of game with a stacked Rampage team in town. Thanks to Wellman's 4 goals and a Cody Almond power play goal, we had enough goals on the board to withstand any comeback attempts by the Rampage!

Too bad that didn't carry over to Sunday's game against the Lake Erie Monsters!! The Aeros put up two early goals then fell apart, allowing 5 unanswered goals to the Monsters. Ouch!

Master Bathroom Remodel

The work is starting next week!!

The vanity has been ordered and should arrive late next week or early the following week. We've picked out the stone & tile for the shower and floor. We still have to pick out facets and shower heads for the shower and some small stuff, but I think we're ready to roll.

We are contracting out some/most of the work. Building a custom shower with custom shower pan and moving plumbing scares me, so we aren't doing any of that work. I'll probably start painting in there this weekend because I want to get paint on the walls & ceiling before we get all of the nice, new stuff in there.

Hubby will have to pack up his closet since it's inside the bathroom, and I'll have to pack up everything from the linen closet and the current vanity. There's lots of work to do before we can really get started!!

I'll take before pictures in the next couple days and post before and after pictures when it's all finished.

The Boy's Soccer... Pictures

We took pictures this weekend for our Christmas cards, and when I pulled all of the pictures off the camera, I found these. I forgot I had them!!

Aeros vs Icehogs... sit down and shut up, please!

Hubby and I took the day off the go to the Aeros day game against the Rockford Icehogs. These day games are field trip days for what seems like a million local area schools! The Toyota Center is over taken by screaming kids!!

Hubby and I have been to several of these kids games over the years, and it's normally just lots and lots of screeching and some crappy music! This time was different.

The group that sat near us were the most disrespectful group of kids I think I've ever seen. It started off with them sitting in the wrong seats, wrong section. There were several season ticket holders that sit near us show up to the game to find their seats already taken. Most of them found other seats to avoid the hassle and probably to avoid being surrounded by these kids. We have 4 seats and 2 of our seats were taken from us.

When it was time for the National Anthem, they talked, laughed, some didn't stand, some faced the wrong direction, etc. It was disturbing, to say the least. I don't care if you put your hand on your heart. I don't care if you sing along or not. I really don't care if you don't stand, although I absolutely think you should. But for the love of God, shut up!

Then, once we got through that, it became a 3-hour long game of musical chairs. Among just switching seats to sit with someone different, I've never seen kids go to the bathroom as much as these kids did. Every 5 seconds, someone else was pushing through to go, without a single "excuse me". I just wanted to tell them all to sit down until there is a whistle!

And, if the kids up and down and moving around wasn't enough distraction, they started throwing popcorn. FAN...TAS...TIC!

These kids are the future of our country and that scares the hell out of me!

I have kids. I know what it's like to have a hyper kid, even one who has a hard time sitting still. But, I guarantee you he is going to stand and be quiet during the National Anthem. He also knows to stay seated until there's a whistle before getting out of his seat. And most importantly, he knows that I will snatch him up by the hair on his head if I ever see or hear of him being that rude and disrespectful. Right now, I'd like to snatch up every one of those parents and ask them what the heck are they thinking! Teach your kids some manners please.
