First Day of School

The day is here.  Most of the area kiddos started school this morning.  We have one boy starting 12th grade and the other boy starting 6th grade.

I don't worry much about the 12 grader.. he's pretty darn responsible, and most of the time, I can count on him to do the right thing.

The youngest boy is a different story.  He's our ADHD boy.   He's going to a new school this year, so it's going to be a totally different experience for him.   I went into work late, so I could accompany him to his bus stop to make sure that he got to the bus stop in time and that he actually got on the bus.   I've been trying to drill into his head his bus number, so he'll be sure to get on the right bus in the afternoon.

Well, this morning, as our luck would have it, a different bus number picked him up.  He did exactly as I told him to do and asked the driver if she was going to his school before getting on the bus.   I asked the bus driver about the bus number.  The regular bus is in the shop, so this one is temporary.  Great... now he has to try to remember this temporary number until they get his bus back.  Unfortunately, they don't put a piece of paper in the window with the correct number like they did when I was in school.  She assured me that should wouldn't leave him this afternoon.

Now, if you know him, you can probably totally imagine with me.  I can see vividly in my mind my boy wandering around in a panic this afternoon because he can't find his bus!!   I'm totally prepared for him to call me later to either tell me that he doesn't know where he is or that he is back at the school because he got on the wrong bus!   I don't even have enough worry in me to think about how this ADHD kid is going to handle a brand new school, 7 classes, a locker, etc without getting in tons of trouble for talking or running or whatever he may do!

I know in my heart that he will be fine.  He's a big boy, he's growing up, and I'm sure he will figure it all out with a little help.  But, that doesn't keep me from worrying, and it sure as heck doesn't keep me from being prepared for what I could be facing in a few hours!!

Once he is home safe and sound, I can then focus on my displeasure of all the "homework" that I will have tonight!   The joys of staring a new school year!
