The Boy's Football... Game 4

This one was a heart breaker!  We lost it 21-28.

2 undefeated teams going head-to-head, live on TV.   The DVR was set, the boys were hyped!!   Here's the write-up from the Chronicle for actual game coverage.

It was an exciting game with lots of back and forth action.  We took the lead, they took the lead, we battled back, they battled back.  It was fun.   However, about the middle of the third quarter, you could just tell our defense was out of gas.  Hands on their hips, walking slowly on and off the field, getting just run over by the other team.

There are several "packages" (plays) that our coaches run on offense that include many of our defensive players.   On short yardage gains, they put the biggest, strongest boys out, rather than the normal offensive line.   I get it, but the problem is, when you have 4 or 5 kids playing both ways, they get worn out.  Up till now, it hasn't really been an issue, but tonight it definitely was.

The frustrating thing about that is that there are so many kids standing on the sidelines that don't see a single minute of playing time.  What kind of message does that send to them?  We are going to absolutely wear out these handful of players because you aren't good enough to play a few plays here and there?!    Would it really hurt that much to sub players in here and there and let your defense rest just a little??   Would it really hurt to let your normal offensive line finish what they started to get the first down?   Hey thanks for getting us 8 or 9 yards, but I don't have confidence in you getting the last 1 or 2, so you're out.  It's not like we are talking all-American, bad ass defensive players.  Yes, they are good players, but they aren't that much better than all of the others who are just standing around.

My boy goofed at one point in the game.  He'll be running his guts out tomorrow in practice, I'm sure!   He's on special teams for extra point kick and field goal.  After our team had scored to regain the lead, he didn't get on the field for the extra point attempt.  By the time he heard the coaches screaming, he charged toward the field, only to be yanked back by the coach because they were about to snap the ball.   The kick was good, so no major harm done, but the coach gave him a good chewing on the sidelines.   Oops!!   Unfortunately, it happens, but I hate when it's my kid!   I was sick for him.  I just knew how bad he felt, and I know what kind of torturous practice he has in his future!!

Our boy told us when he got home that he tried to apologize to the special teams coach, telling him that he didn't have any excuse, but that he was sorry.  The coach wanted nothing to do with him and told our boy that he might now lose his job because of that.  Drama King a little?   Honestly, if you are going to lose your job because one player missed his assignment, you probably don't need that job.   That's like saying the head coach will lose his job after one loss.  Not likely!  Get over yourself!

We just told our boy to take his lumps and move on.  He thinks they'll kick him off special teams.  If they do, they do.  There's not much we can do about it, and six months from now, it really won't matter.    We'll see what happens.

After he ate and we all chatted for a bit, he sat down and watched the entire game from the DVR.  He's obsessed with football, and it breaks my heart how much these coaches are just killing his passion for the game.  Maybe the silver lining is that he's learning what not to do when he becomes a football coach, since that's what he's planning to do eventually!!  Always a plus side!
