I had jury duty this morning, which I was not at all thrilled about. At least it's a change of pace, and I certainly could use that these days!
Last time I had jury duty, I rode the bus. It's a free trip downtown when you show your jury summons, but be prepared to pay for your trip home. That's not free! This time I decided to drive. Rather than spend the $3 or so on a bus ride, I'd spent $4 on a parking spot! But, when it was over, I could jump in my car and go. No waiting for a bus.
I got there about 7:45 and had to go through security. This was new since the last time I had to go. It's almost like being at the airport, just a smaller building and a shorter line! Shoes off and all. After going through security, you are sent to one of four rooms, depending on your juror number. This was new also. Last time, there was one big room for everyone.
Be prepared to sit and wait. The first few hours seems like the biggest waste of time. Just sitting and waiting.
We were finally broken out into several groups to head to a court. I was sent to the 164th civil court along with 35 other potential jurors. Then we had to wait some more. Apparently the judge was going over last minute details with the litigants and lawyers before we could go in. Eventually, we were broken into lines to be seated inside the courtroom.
I'm sure it's no secret how much people hate jury duty and prepare to tell the lawyers that everyone is guilty no matter what. That'll get you off right?!? Well, the judge decided to have a little fun. She went through her speech about how important jury service is and then proceeded to tell us that this particular trial would take 2 months to complete. Just about everyone slumped down in their seats, sighed, and mumbled some sort of profanity under their breath!
After scaring us half to death that we'd be there for 2 months, she told us that the litigants had settled the matter, so there wouldn't be a case. We were all free to go. I got my work release form, although I don't think I really need it, and headed on my way. I think I parked in the most convenient place possible because it was one turn out of the parking lot, and I was on my way out of downtown.
Lots of time and gas wasted, but I served my duty and now I'm free for another year or two. One of these days I won't be so lucky, so for now, I'm thankful that people can resolve their stupid disputes before having to take time from all of us.
